Ogun Governor Investigates Gas Leak at Ijebu Ode School, Orders Closure
Ogun State Governor Dapo Abiodun has directed a full investigation into a gas leak at Our Lady of Apostles Secondary School, Ijebu Ode, which left about 30 students and at least one teacher hospitalised. The incident occurred shortly after assembly on Wednesday, when a suspected gaseous substance spread across the school premises.
Governor Abiodun has also ordered the immediate closure of the school to prevent further incidents. A Situation Room has been set up at the General Hospital, Ijebu-Ode, to provide free medical treatment to affected students and residents in nearby areas, including Makalewo, Ogbogbo, Molipa, Igbegba, Ikoto, and Oke-Aje market.
Ogun State Commissioner for Environment Ola Oresanya stated that the Ogun State Environmental Protection Agency deployed gas analysers to determine the source and nature of the substance. Officials also visited the school and the hospital, confirming that most victims are in stable condition.
The cause of the leak is still under investigation, with early reports suggesting potential links to laboratory chemicals or nearby human activity. Authorities have assured residents that there is no confirmed security threat and urged calm.

“Governor Abiodun has directed security agencies to unravel the cause of the incident. He has also ordered the immediate opening of a Situation Room at the General Hospital, Ijebu-Ode, which will offer free treatment to students and residents of the impacted areas, including Makalewo, Ogbogbo, Molipa, Igbegba, Ikoto and Oke-Aje market. Residents are advised not to panic as there is no confirmed security threat linked to the incident,” the Commissioner for Environment, Ola Oresanya, said.
