Southampton Shock Arsenal 2-1 To Reach FA Cup Semi-Finals

Southampton F.C. stunned Premier League leaders Arsenal F.C. with a dramatic 2-1 victory to book a place in the semi-finals of the FA Cup on Saturday.

Manager Mikel Arteta’s side suffered a shock quarter-final exit after Shea Charles scored a late winner in a memorable giant-killing encounter at St Mary’s Stadium.
Ross Stewart had given Southampton the lead in the first half before Viktor Gyökeres equalised for Arsenal in the second half. However, Charles’ composed finish in the closing minutes sealed a famous victory for the Championship side.
The defeat marked only Arsenal’s fifth loss in all competitions this season and dealt another blow to their hopes of ending a six-year trophy drought. The Gunners had earlier lost the League Cup final to Manchester City F.C. before the international break.
Despite the setback, Arsenal remain favourites to win the Premier League title for the first time since 2004, holding a nine-point lead over second-placed Manchester City. The league title remains their primary focus after three consecutive runner-up finishes in recent seasons.
However, the loss will raise concerns for Arteta, especially given the club’s history of losing momentum during crucial stages of competitions. The absence of key players such as Bukayo Saka and Declan Rice also affected the team’s performance.
Arsenal will now shift attention to their upcoming UEFA Champions League quarter-final first-leg clash against Sporting CP as they aim to bounce back quickly.
For Southampton, the victory represents one of the most memorable results in the club’s recent history. The Saints have now reached the FA Cup semi-finals for the first time since 2021 and will look to continue their impressive run in the competition.
The Championship side are currently pushing for promotion back to the Premier League and remain unbeaten in their last 15 matches in all competitions, boosting confidence ahead of their next crucial league fixture.
