Dr. Kabir Adamu, CEO of Beacon Consulting, has revealed that his research shows that at least 5,000 Nigerians were killed between January and June this year. “My research reveals that no fewer than 5,000 Nigerians were killed between January and June this year,” Adamu said during a live television event in Abuja, organized by Daria Media Limited and sponsored by MacArthur Foundation.

Adamu expressed concern over the payment of levies by communities to non-state actors, which he sees as a failure of the security apparatus. “We cannot continue to pay levies to non-state actors; it is an indication of the failure of the security apparatus to protect the people,” he said.

Brigadier General Sani Usman (rtd) attributed the security challenges to the lack of empowerment of ordinary Nigerians. “To what extent have you empowered an average Nigerian to have a sense of belonging and contribute their quota to the fight against insecurity?” he asked.

The event aimed to promote engagement between the government, citizens, and civil society on issues of economy, security, and governance. In her statement, the Chief Executive Officer of Daria Media Limited, Kadaria Ahmed, said, “This event is a credible platform for the government to give an account of what it has done in the areas of economy, security, and governance under President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for the past year.”

Earlier, Director of MacArthur Foundation in Africa, Kole Shetima, disclosed the body’s commitment to ensuring accountability in the country, saying, “We have the mandate to support the government, civil society groups, and institutions in Nigeria.”
