The Minister of Environment, Balarabe Lawal, has raised the alarm that Nigeria is facing a silent energy crisis, with only one in 10 households in the country using clean energy sources and technologies for cooking.
Lawal stated this in a statement signed by the Head, Press and Public Relations Unit of the ministry, Ibrahim Haruna, on Saturday.
He said, “Nigeria is facing a silent energy crisis. Only one in 10 households in the country use clean energy sources and technologies for cooking. Traditional cooking with firewood and other polluting fuels such as kerosene and charcoal are claiming lives, causes deforestation, and contributes to the effect of climate change as well as putting a burden on women.”
The minister also disclosed that implementing the National Clean Cooking Policy of Nigeria would attract about 10 million direct jobs among youths.
He emphasized the need for urgent action to address the energy crisis, which he described as a major challenge facing the country.
Lawal’s warning comes as Nigeria continues to grapple with various developmental challenges, including sustainable development goals, malaria elimination targets, and hunger crisis.
The minister’s statement is a call to action for stakeholders to join hands in addressing the energy crisis and promoting clean energy sources and technologies in the country.
