As controversies, violence, and glitches mar previous elections and campaign mudslinging for the Edo State 2024 governorship election, attention shifts to the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), the Police, and other security agencies to ensure a credible and peaceful poll.

The ruling Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Edo alleges the opposition All Progressives Congress (APC) is using federal might and police to win. The PDP complains about the arrest of its leaders across the state and plots to arrest more, urging the Inspector-General of Police to release those arrested and ensure a free and fair election.

On the other hand, the APC demands the arrest of those implicated in the killing of a police officer attached to its candidate, Senator Monday Okpebhelo. Governor Obaseki insists the police should investigate properly, as they are accusing and arresting innocent people.

Yiaga Africa, an election monitoring group, fears violence in eight LGAs due to economic hardship, security volatility, and distrust in state institutions and electoral processes. The group’s chair, Dr. Aisha Abdulahi, raises concerns about voter inducement and vote-buying by most political parties.
