Raphael Varane, a member of France’s 2018 World Cup-winning squad and former Manchester United defender, announced his retirement from football at the age of 31 on Wednesday.
Varane made the announcement on his Instagram account, stating that he will remain with Italian club Como in a non-playing capacity.
“A new life begins off the pitch,” Varane said. “I will remain with Como. Just without using my boots and shin pads. Something I am looking forward to sharing more about soon.”
Varane had joined Como for the current season but suffered a knee injury in August, which led to his exclusion from the club’s Serie A squad.
The French defender had a illustrious career, winning four Champions League titles, three La Liga titles, a League Cup, and an FA Cup.
Varane came through the academy at French club Lens before joining Real Madrid as an 18-year-old in 2011. He later joined Manchester United in 2021, where he won a League Cup and an FA Cup.
With the French national team, Varane made his debut in 2013 and was part of the 2018 World Cup-winning squad. He finished his international career with 93 caps.
“I have won more than I could have even dreamed of,” Varane said. “But beyond the accolades and trophies, I am proud that no matter what, I have stuck to my principles of being sincere and have tried to leave everywhere better than I found it.”
Former teammates, including Manchester United’s Bruno Fernandes, paid tribute to Varane.
“It was a pleasure for all of us,” Fernandes said on Instagram.
Varane’s retirement marks the end of an impressive career, with many praising his dedication, skill, and achievements in the sport.
