Jude Bellingham’s header in the 66th minute gave England a 1-0 victory against Serbia in their Euro 2024 opener. The goal came after a corner kick by Aston Villa’s Emiliano Buendia.
The win puts England in second place in Group D, trailing Ukraine, which defeated Northern Ireland 2-0 in the group’s earlier match. England’s next game is against Denmark on June 20.
In another match, the Netherlands defeated Poland 2-1, with goals from Georginio Wijnaldum and Memphis Depay. Poland’s Karol Swiderski scored an own goal, which gave the Dutch their winning margin.
Slovenia tied 1-1 against Denmark, with Andraz Sporar scoring the equalizer for Slovenia in the 79th minute. Denmark had taken the lead in the 54th minute through a goal by Martin Braithwaite.
The Netherlands’ victory over Poland was a hard-fought one, with the Dutch having to come from behind to win. Poland took the lead in the 30th minute through a goal by Robert Lewandowski, but the Netherlands equalized just before halftime through Wijnaldum’s strike. Depay scored the winner in the 66th minute, and the Dutch held on for the win.
Slovenia’s draw against Denmark was a surprise result, as Denmark was expected to win easily. However, Slovenia’s Sporar had other plans, and his equalizer secured a valuable point for his team.
