The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) in Ogun State announced the recovery of significant quantities of illegal substances over the past five months. These include:
– 3.33 tonnes of cannabis sativa
– 10.949 kg of psychotropic substances
– 0.017 kg of cocaine
– 227.0 liters of skuchies
– 11.0 liters of codeine
– 0.129 kg of methamphetamine
Commander of Narcotics, Tijjani Rabe, disclosed these details during a press conference at the Command’s headquarters in Abeokuta, held in conjunction with the 2024 United Nations International Day Against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking.
Rabe reported that the agency arrested 117 male and 30 female suspects and secured 86 convictions. The agency has charged 71 cases and has 174 pending cases. The NDLEA also provided brief interventions to 112 clients, including five females and 107 males.
The commander emphasized the importance of prevention-focused strategies to reduce illicit drug use, particularly among youth who are susceptible to peer pressure. He highlighted the need for families, schools, religious organizations, and professional bodies to invest in prevention to stop activities leading to illicit drug use.
The theme of the 2024 celebration, “The Evidence Is Clear, Invest In Prevention,” aligns with the command’s drug control initiatives, such as the War Against Drug Abuse (WADA), which targets schools, community leaders, religious organizations, and political leaders to enhance the well-being of Ogun State residents.
