The Nigeria Union of Teachers (NUT) has called on President Bola Tinubu to implement the welfare packages approved for teachers by former President Muhammadu Buhari since 2020.
Speaking in Abuja on Sunday during an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN), NUT National President, Comrade Audu Amba, expressed concern that five years after the Federal Government’s pledge, key promises remain unfulfilled.
According to Amba, the non-implementation of the special salary structure and other welfare benefits continues to impact teachers’ morale, productivity, and overall well-being.
He urged both the federal and state governments to ensure full implementation of the incentives to support teachers in carrying out their professional responsibilities effectively.
Among the approved packages are the Special Salary Scale for basic and secondary school teachers, reintroduction of bursary awards for education students, and a Special Teachers’ Pension Scheme aimed at retaining experienced personnel in the profession.
Amba also noted that the incentives include extended retirement age to 65 years, housing units for teachers, science teacher allowances, automatic admission and tuition-free education for teachers’ children in public schools, and automatic employment for education graduates.
“There are so many incentives that are attached to it; housing units for teachers, allowances for science teachers, and students reading education courses,” Amba stated.
He emphasized that the union has continued to advocate for the implementation through messages during Teachers’ Day celebrations and other engagements with government representatives.
“We are appealing to President Tinubu to take another bold step in implementing these welfare packages because government is a continuum,” he said.
Amba commended teachers for their resilience and sacrifices despite the challenging conditions and encouraged them to uphold the values of the teaching profession.
The Buhari administration had announced the welfare packages during the 2020 World Teachers’ Day, including a five-year extension of service years from 35 to 40 years and various loan facilities for teachers in areas such as agriculture, housing, cars, and motorcycles.
