The Ogun State chapter of the National Youth Council of Nigeria (NYCN) has appealed to Governor Dapo Abiodun to establish a dedicated Ministry for Youth Development in the state and appoint a commissioner to oversee youth affairs.

The appeal was made in a letter dated June 27, 2025, signed by the State Chairman of the Council, Akolawole Shoremi, and the Secretary, Dotun Opaleye.

The council expressed concern over the prolonged absence of a functional ministry solely focused on youth-related matters in Ogun State, warning that the situation could result in social disengagement, vulnerability to vices, economic stagnation, and a widening trust gap between the government and the youth population.

“The non-existence of a Ministry for Youth Development, since its pronouncement, sends an unintended but nonetheless disheartening message that the concerns, aspirations, and potential of the young people of Ogun State are probably not prioritised with the same focused attention as other crucial sectors,” the statement read.

The youth leaders noted that the lack of such a ministry has led to growing disappointment and feelings of marginalisation among the youth, affecting their ability to fully contribute to the development of the state.

They called on Governor Abiodun, who also serves as Chairman of the Southern Governors’ Forum, to take the lead by showing a strong commitment to youth inclusion and empowerment.

The group emphasized that creating the ministry would serve as a significant step toward ensuring structured engagement and the implementation of impactful youth-focused policies in the state.
