President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has praised Nobel Laureate Wole Soyinka, describing him as a beacon of Nigerian culture and intellectual excellence. During the commissioning of a new arterial road in Abuja, now named Wole Soyinka Way, Tinubu highlighted Soyinka’s unparalleled contributions to literature and his steadfast commitment to human rights and social justice.
Tinubu stated, “Professor Wole Soyinka has brought immense honour and fame to Nigeria through his unparalleled contributions to literature and his unwavering commitment to human rights and social justice. Naming this highway after him is a fitting tribute to a man who has dedicated his life to the pursuit of truth, freedom, and artistic excellence”.
The Wole Soyinka Way, part of a series of infrastructure projects inaugurated to mark Tinubu’s first year in office, is a testament to his administration’s commitment to enhancing urban development and fostering sustainable growth. The road, which connects several key districts in Abuja, is expected to significantly improve ease of movement and stimulate economic activity in the region.
The dedication ceremony also featured remarks from the FCT Minister, Nyesom Wike, who noted the project’s importance and expressed confidence in the continued development under Tinubu’s leadership. The President’s decision to honor Soyinka while he is still alive was also emphasized as a significant gesture recognizing the enduring impact of his work on Nigerian society.
