Super Eagles striker Taiwo Awoniyi has expressed deep gratitude to his family, Nottingham Forest, teammates, and fans after recovering from a medically induced coma following emergency surgery.
Awoniyi suffered an abdominal injury during Nottingham Forest’s 2-2 draw with Leicester City. Although not life-threatening, the injury required urgent surgical attention. Post-surgery, the striker was placed in an induced coma for close monitoring but was revived on Thursday.
In his first public statement, Awoniyi said, “This season has been one of the most difficult of my career, but through it all, I have felt the love. By the grace of God, I am grateful to still be here, to still be fighting, to still be smiling, and to be in good spirits.”
He extended heartfelt thanks to the Nottingham Forest family for their support and visits, which he said lifted his spirits.
With Forest chasing a Champions League spot and having secured a vital 2-1 win at West Ham, Awoniyi encouraged his teammates to remain focused:
“Wishing the boys the very best in these last two games. Keep believing and keep pushing. I’m with you all the way, and I can’t wait to be back out there doing what I love.”
He also thanked his fans across the world, especially Nigerians, saying:
“To everyone in Nigeria who has checked in on me, prayed for me, and shared kind words — thank you. I see them. I feel them. And I carry them with me every day as I recover.”
Awoniyi’s season has been troubled by injuries and limited form, managing just one goal in 25 league appearances. Despite the setback, the striker remains optimistic and focused on recovery.
