Mokwa, Niger State – June 5, 2025 – President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has assured the people of Mokwa, Niger State, of the Federal Government’s commitment to rebuild and restore the flood-ravaged town, which recently suffered the loss of over 207 lives and widespread destruction of property.
Delivering the President’s message during a visit to the town, Vice President Kashim Shettima announced a ₦2 billion intervention fund and directed that 20 trucks of grains be delivered to the victims of the disaster. He said the distribution of relief materials would be carried out in collaboration with the Village Head of Mokwa, Mohammed Shaba.
“To the people of Mokwa, we say: we will rebuild. We will restore the vibrancy for which this town is known,” Shettima said. “This tragedy is one that affects us all as a nation.”
President Tinubu also ordered the Minister of Environment, Balarabe Lawal, to temporarily relocate to the state to oversee emergency response efforts through the Agro-Climatic Resilience in Semi-Arid Landscapes (ACReSAL) drainage project, which is funded by the World Bank and targets climate change challenges in 19 northern states.
The Niger State government reported that 208 people had died in the flood, with 84 still missing. Over 13,000 residents were affected, and significant infrastructure—including homes, roads, and bridges—was damaged.
Vice President Shettima, joined by Ministers from Niger State, conducted an aerial survey of the affected areas and met with traditional leaders and state officials. He emphasized the importance of long-term recovery efforts, noting that ecological and environmental issues would be addressed with sustainable solutions.
“The greatest tribute we can offer those we lost is to build a future that minimizes such disasters,” Shettima stated.
He also announced plans for the installation of transformers in Mokwa to ensure consistent power supply, directing the Niger Delta Power Holding Company to take charge of the project.
Deputy Governor Yakubu Garba, who received the Vice President in the absence of Governor Mohammed Bago currently on pilgrimage in Saudi Arabia, expressed gratitude for the swift federal intervention. He appealed for the rehabilitation of critical infrastructure, including the Jaba-Mokwa-Bida road and rail lines linking northern and southern Nigeria.
Secretary to the State Government Abubakar Gawu said the Vice President’s visit had lifted the community’s morale. Special Adviser to the Governor on Special Duties, Murtala Bagana, reported that 186 people were injured, 4,534 displaced, and 265 houses, two roads, and five bridges damaged in the flood.
The Etsu Nupe and chairman of the state council of traditional rulers, Yahaya Abubakar, praised the Federal Government’s response and called for the completion of abandoned road projects around Mokwa. He also urged the deployment of environmental experts to address ongoing ecological challenges.
Village Head of Mokwa, Mohammed Shaba, described the flood as a divine test and expressed confidence in the town’s recovery with continued government support.
