We didn’t stop under-18 students from writing WASSCE, NECO — Minister
The federal government has clarified that it is yet to implement its new education policy restricting the age of students writing senior school certificate examinations and entry into universities.
Minister of State for Education, Dr. Yusuf Sununu, stated in Abuja that the government never stopped students under 18 from writing examinations, contrary to public speculation.
Dr. Sununu explained that Minister of Education, Prof. Tahir Mamman’s statement on August 25 was misunderstood. Prof. Mamman had announced that the Federal Government instructed WAEC and NECO not to allow underage children to write their examinations.
However, Dr. Sununu clarified that Prof. Mamman was referring to the minimum entry age into tertiary institutions, which is 18 years, as provided in Nigeria’s 6:3:3:4 education system.
He expressed disappointment at the public misunderstanding and emphasized that the new policy is still a work in progress.
Dr. Sununu stated, “We have agreed that we are going to consider it as a work-in-progress. The National Assembly is working, and we are also working.”
He also expressed concern about underage university admissions, citing instances of students receiving admission at ages 10, 11, and 12.
The Minister’s clarification aims to address the confusion surrounding the new education policy and its implementation.
