The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, has denied rumours suggesting he may run for president in 2027, pledging his full loyalty to President Bola Tinubu.
Speaking during an interview with BBC News Pidgin on Saturday, Wike, the former governor of Rivers State, said he has no intention of contesting against President Tinubu.
“If the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) zones the presidential ticket to the South, will you contest?” the interviewer asked. Wike replied, “I will not contest. Why will I contest against someone I’m working for?”
Wike also dismissed the strength of the opposition, stating, “There is nobody in the opposition to challenge President Tinubu.”
He added, “They said they will zone it to the South, let them zone first. When we get to the bridge, we will know how to cross it.”
The minister’s remarks come amid ongoing speculation about possible presidential contenders ahead of the 2027 general election. Some party insiders had hinted Wike could be a top contender if the PDP’s zoning arrangement favours the South.
Wike’s open support for President Tinubu, despite being a prominent figure from the opposition PDP, has sparked various political debates in recent months.
His statement appears to solidify his alignment with the current administration, amid concerns about cross-party loyalties and 2027 election permutations.
