President Tinubu Declares 22nd National Sports Festival Open In Ogun

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, represented by Vice President Kashim Shettima, officially declared open the 22nd National Sports Festival on Sunday, May 18, 2025, at the MKO Abiola International Stadium, Abeokuta, Ogun State.

The colorful ceremony, themed “Gateway Games 2024,” marked the second time Ogun State is hosting the prestigious multi-sport event since its inception in 1973. Over 10,000 spectators witnessed a blend of cultural performances, parades, and music that showcased Nigeria’s rich diversity and unity.

Dignitaries in attendance included Governor Dapo Abiodun of Ogun State, alongside governors from Osun, Kogi, Anambra, and Imo States. Also present were former President Olusegun Obasanjo, the Alake of Egbaland Oba Adedotun Gbadebo, and other top government officials.

The ceremony featured a parade of athletes from all 36 states and the FCT, as well as thrilling performances by top Nigerian artistes including Asa and Davido. The Gateway Games 2024 is expected to host over 15,000 athletes competing in 549 events across various venues in Abeokuta, Ikenne, Sagamu, and Ijebu-Ode.

In his remarks, the Vice President emphasized the role of sports in promoting national unity and youth development. He commended the Ogun State Government for the successful hosting and infrastructural upgrades across the venues.

The festival, which runs for two weeks, promises to deliver high-level competition and serve as a platform to discover the next generation of sporting talents in Nigeria.
